Retrofitting Humphree Lightning to a Boston Whaler 305 Conquest
Shotgun Marine Services came to us with another Humphree Lightning automation trim and stabilisation system retrofit story - this time, for a Boston Whaler 305 Conquest. The upgrade has been a genuine success story, enhancing what was already an impressive offshore fishing boat.The boat is the owner's passion. It’s generously appointed, meticulously maintained, and powered by two grunty XXHP Mercury engines.
The owner needed to replace the existing trim tabs. The Lightning system retrofit was chosen to gain Lightning's performance, handling, and economy advantages it delivers.
Boston Whaler boats are renowned for their quality, solid build, and deep dead-rise hull design that cuts through lumpy water. But every hull design leans on one end and compromises between speed, acceleration, handling and performance in uneven seas. That’s where the Lightning system makes such an incredible difference.
Humphree Lightning’s ability to modify the characteristics of the boat’s behaviour in different stages of acceleration, speed, turning and sea states unlocks new levels of comfort, performance, handling and fuel economy.
The Retrofitted System and Install
SMS Port Macquarie performed a very tidy retrofit. As mentioned, the Boston Whaler has twin outboards and was initially built with trim-tab pockets.
The installation included 450mm interceptors, The comfort software package and underwater lights.
The steps involved:
- Removal of the old trim tabs
- Partial filling of the trim tab pockets and hull penetration points
- Routing power to the interceptors
- Painting and finishing the hull modifications and Lightning interceptors
- Installing the interceptors and control panel
- Calibration and testing.
Kurt Nocelli from SMS Port Macquarie described the installation process:
“This install on this Boston Whaler was very straightforward for us. We started by modifying the transom to adapt from the old trim tab layout to the new Humphree Lightning interceptors. Ideally, the interceptors are mounted wide on the transom to achieve the most significant leverage effect. We accomplished that and wound up with a very neat installation.
‘We were able to adapt part of the previous hull penetrations, so the only penetrations below the water line are the Lightning interceptor fixing bolts.
“Next is the initial calibration according to the boat’s hump speed, the extent of interceptor extension at hump speed and the speed at which the interceptors are retracted. Then, we conduct on-water testing and make adjustments to achieve the perfect balance of performance.
“With the Boston Whaler, the outcome is quite a fantastic transformation, particularly considering this boat's strong reputation for performance.
The Humphree Lightning system lifts the boat onto the plane faster. The deep dead-rise of the Boston Whaler is effective for cutting through rough seas but has side effects.
They tend to lean over in crosswinds and can be less economical on longer high-speed trips. The Lightning system neutralises the compromises and results in a boat that accelerates onto the plane more efficiently, cruises at speed more comfortably and economically and exhibits greater roll stability.
“The owner is thrilled with the result, which always makes us happy too”.
The owner said, “I’m amazed by the difference it’s made. We started with a very good boat, and it's now even better at using the power of two big Mercs. It’s more comfortable at speed, and it's saving me money on fuel.”
